Getting a Driver’s License in Texas: The Basics

Looking for online drivers ed in Texas? DriverEdToGo helps teens complete their classroom instruction and understand the steps toward a learner license and provisional driver’s license.

Texas teens can begin driver education at 14, apply for a learner license at 15, and qualify for a provisional license at 16. Getting licensed takes more than finishing an online course: teens also need supervised driving, in-car instruction, and the required tests.

DriverEdToGo provides Texas driver education through GetDefensive.com, Texas Driver Education School License No. C258-8. Our offerings include Parent-Taught Driver Education and Teen Driver Education using the Block Method.

Here’s the road ahead at a glance:

  • Start driver education: Beginning at age 14.
  • Apply for a learner license: Beginning at 15, after completing the classroom instruction required by your course method and meeting DPS requirements.
  • Earn a provisional license: Beginning at 16, after the required learner license holding period, education, driving practice, and testing.
  • Transition to adult licensing: At 18, teen restrictions end, but you must keep your license valid and complete any required renewal.

Choose Your Texas Drivers Ed Online Pathway

Our two teen offerings include 32 hours of online classroom instruction. Texas’s current minimum classroom requirement is 24 hours; the course length and completion instructions for your selected program still apply.

Parent-Taught Driver Education

Parent-Taught Driver Education, or PTDE, lets an eligible parent, guardian, or designated adult guide the student through an approved curriculum and provide the required in-car instruction.

Before starting, your instructor must confirm eligibility, apply for authorization through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and obtain the PTDE Program Guide. You also need course materials from a licensed provider with a parent-taught endorsement.

PTDE involves more than supervising practice drives. Your instructor is responsible for following the curriculum, documenting instruction, and completing the required records.

Teen Driver Education: Block Method

Our Teen Driver Education Block Method course lets you complete your online classroom instruction before moving on to in-car training with a licensed driving school.

Arrange your professional driving lessons separately and confirm the school’s enrollment and transfer-document requirements.

Block Method describes the order of instruction. It means finishing the classroom phase before applying for your learner license. The concurrent method allows eligible students to apply after the initial six classroom hours and continue the remaining coursework afterward. Parent-taught programs can also use these methods; follow the method assigned to your course.

How to Get Your Texas Driver’s License, Step by Step

Step 1: Complete Your Classroom Instruction

You can begin the classroom portion of Texas teen driver education at 14.

Our online courses cover traffic laws, road signs, safe driving decisions, and sharing the road. Study on your computer, tablet, or smartphone, with automatic time tracking and progress saving.

If you choose PTDE, wait until your instructor has received the required TDLR authorization and your course materials are available before beginning instruction.

Follow your program’s instructions for receiving your learner license certificate. Finishing classroom instruction does not certify that you have completed your driving lessons or supervised practice.

Step 2: Apply for Your Texas Learner License at 15

Once you meet the age and classroom requirements for your selected method, schedule a DPS appointment.

Prepare to:

  • Complete the driver license application and required parental authorization.
  • Provide proof of identity, Texas residency, and U.S. citizenship or lawful presence.
  • Provide your Social Security number.
  • Bring the appropriate Texas driver education certificate.
  • Provide a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance form, high school diploma, GED, or another accepted document.
  • Pass the knowledge exam if you have not already passed it through your course.
  • Pass the vision exam and pay the applicable fee.

PTDE students should also follow their Program Guide’s document checklist.

With a learner license, a licensed adult age 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat whenever you drive. A learner license does not allow you to drive alone.

Step 3: Complete Your Driving Instruction and Practice

Before qualifying for a provisional license, teens must complete:

  • 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • 7 hours of in-car observation.
  • 30 additional hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 at night.

For PTDE, your eligible instructor follows the approved curriculum and completes the required records. For the professional instruction pathway, a licensed driving school provides the instructional driving and observation hours.

Keep your practice records current and follow the applicable daily limits. Use the sessions to develop skills in parking, intersections, lane changes, traffic, and nighttime driving.

Applicants under 18 generally must hold a valid learner license for at least six months before receiving a provisional license.

Step 4: Complete ITTD and Take Your Driving Test

After completing your driver education and required driving hours, take the Impact Texas Teen Drivers program, or ITTD.

This free, two-hour DPS video program addresses distracted driving. It is separate from your driver education course, and its completion certificate must be valid when you take your driving test. Complete it within 90 days before the test and bring your certificate.

Once you are at least 16 and have met the learner license holding period and other requirements, schedule your driving test with DPS or an authorized testing provider.

Follow the testing location’s instructions for documents and a suitable vehicle with current registration and insurance. After you pass, complete the remaining DPS application requirements to receive your provisional license.

Texas Teen Driving Laws You Should Know

Provisional License Restrictions

Drivers under 18 with a provisional license generally cannot:

  • Carry more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member.
  • Drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m., except for qualifying employment, school-related activities, or a medical emergency.
  • Use a wireless communication device while driving, including hands-free use, except in an emergency.

Plan your trips and passengers around these restrictions. Independent driving comes with limits while you build experience.

Phone Rules Also Apply With a Learner License

The under-18 phone restriction applies while learning, too. Having an adult beside you does not make routine phone use acceptable.

Set your route before driving, silence notifications, and let your supervising adult handle navigation when needed.

Parent-Taught Instructor Eligibility Matters

Being a parent does not automatically make someone eligible to teach PTDE.

Texas considers the instructor’s driving history and other eligibility requirements. DPS checks the instructor’s driving record during the licensing process. If an instructor is disqualified, affected instruction hours may not count.

Review the TDLR parent-instructor requirements before beginning.

Texas Insurance Requirements

Texas requires drivers to demonstrate financial responsibility. Most do this through liability insurance with at least:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury per person.
  • $60,000 for bodily injury per accident.
  • $25,000 for property damage per accident.

These limits are commonly called 30/60/25 coverage. Liability coverage pays for covered injuries and damage you cause to others; it does not provide the same protection as collision or comprehensive coverage for your own vehicle.

Before your teen begins driving, ask your insurer how your policy covers a learner driver and what changes are needed when the teen becomes licensed.

Texas Driver Education for Adults Ages 18–24

Applying for your first Texas driver’s license at 18 through 24? Texas generally requires a six-hour adult driver education course before testing.

If you already completed a qualifying teen driver education program, check with DPS about using that completion documentation before purchasing another course.

Adults follow a different licensing process from applicants under 18. The teen six-month learner license holding requirement does not apply after turning 18, but adults must still meet applicable documentation, vision, knowledge, and driving test requirements.

Applicants age 25 or older generally do not have to complete driver education. The applicable Impact Texas Drivers program is still required before the driving skills test.

Choose the course that matches your age and licensing history. The teen programs described on this page are separate from the six-hour adult course.

Texas Driver’s License FAQ

You can begin driver education at 14, apply for a learner license at 15, and qualify for a provisional license at 16 after completing the required education, practice, holding period, and tests.

Can I take Texas drivers ed online?

Yes. DriverEdToGo offers online classroom instruction for its Texas teen programs. You must still complete the applicable in-car instruction, supervised practice, and licensing tests.

Does Texas require 24 or 32 classroom hours?

Texas’s current minimum is 24 classroom hours. Our teen offerings described here include 32 hours. Complete the coursework required by your selected program and follow its certificate instructions.

What’s the difference between Parent-Taught and professional driving instruction?

In PTDE, an eligible, authorized parent or designated adult follows an approved curriculum and teaches the in-car portion. With professional instruction, a licensed driving school provides those lessons. Both routes also require supervised practice.

What does Block Method mean?

It means completing the classroom phase before applying for your learner license. It describes the sequence of instruction, rather than who teaches the driving lessons.

Can any parent teach Parent-Taught Driver Education?

No. The instructor must meet Texas eligibility requirements and complete the TDLR authorization process before instruction begins. Follow the PTDE Program Guide and approved curriculum.

Can I drive alone after finishing the online course?

No. Course completion does not authorize independent driving. A learner license requires a licensed adult age 21 or older in the front passenger seat.

Are professional driving lessons included in the online classroom course?

Professional in-car lessons are arranged separately with a licensed driving school. PTDE families must follow their approved program’s driving curriculum and documentation requirements.

What is ITTD, and when should I take it?

Impact Texas Teen Drivers is a free, two-hour DPS program about distracted driving. Complete it after your required driver education and driving hours, within 90 days before your driving test.

When can I drive my friends around?

With a provisional license, drivers under 18 generally may carry no more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member. Nighttime and phone restrictions also apply.

Do I need driver education if I’m 18 or older?

First-time applicants ages 18–24 generally need a six-hour adult driver education course. If you already completed qualifying teen driver education, check with DPS before enrolling again. Applicants age 25 or older generally do not need driver education.
