How to Get Your Nevada Driver’s License, Step by Step
Step 1: Apply for Your Instruction Permit at 15½
You do not need to finish driver education before applying for a Nevada instruction permit.
Prepare to:

- Provide the identity, Social Security, and Nevada residency documents required for your credential.
- Submit the required school-attendance documentation if you are under 18.

Nevada uses Certification of Attendance, Form DMV 301, to document school attendance or an applicable exemption. Homeschooled students and students who have completed high school should follow the form’s instructions for their circumstances.
You can take the knowledge test through the DMV’s approved online testing service or in person. Passing online does not issue your permit—you must still complete the remaining DMV requirements.
Once your instruction permit is issued, you can practice with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has at least one year of driving experience, seated beside you. An instruction permit does not allow you to drive alone.
Step 2: Complete Your 30-Hour Nevada Driver Education Course

Step 3: Complete and Document Your Supervised Practice
For the standard driver education pathway, complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
Record your sessions using the DMV’s Beginning Driver Experience Log, Form DLD-130, or the accepted RoadReady app. Follow DMV instructions for submitting the log and obtaining the required parent or guardian signature.
Professional driving lessons can count toward your supervised experience. Use your practice time to develop skills with parking, intersections, lane changes, traffic, and nighttime visibility.
Before qualifying for a license, you must also:
- Be at least 16.
- Hold a valid instruction permit for at least six months.
- Meet the six-month driving-record requirement.
Nevada requires the qualifying period to be free of at-fault crashes, moving-violation convictions, and alcohol or drug convictions. A qualifying incident can delay your eligibility; a citation and a conviction are not the same thing.
Step 4: Pass Your Driving Test and Complete Licensing
When you meet the requirements, schedule your Nevada driving skills test.
Bring your instruction permit, driver education certificate, completed driving log, required application documents, and parent or guardian as directed by the DMV. Provide a suitable test vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
The examiner evaluates your ability to control the vehicle, follow traffic laws, and respond safely to road conditions.
