Getting a Driver’s License in California: The Basics
With California drivers ed online from DriverEdToGo, you can complete your driver education requirement on a schedule that works for you. DriverEdToGo is a California DMV-licensed driving school (License No. E4472), and our online course covers the 30-hour driver education curriculum while helping you prepare for the steps ahead.
California teens can apply for a learner’s permit starting at 15½ and earn a provisional license starting at 16 after completing the required education, training, practice, and tests.
Here’s the road ahead at a glance:
- Learner’s permit: Available starting at 15½ after meeting the education and application requirements and passing the DMV’s knowledge and vision tests.
- Provisional license: Available starting at 16 after holding a permit for at least six months, completing the required driving instruction and practice, and passing the driving test.
- End of provisional passenger and nighttime restrictions: After the first 12 months with your license or when you turn 18, whichever comes first.
Already 17½ or older? California allows applicants approaching 18 to obtain a permit without driver education or driver training certificates, but those using this exception must wait until 18 to take the driving test.
How California Drivers Ed Online Fits Into Your Licensing Steps
Step 1: Complete Your Driver Education Course
For teens following the standard path to a license before 18, driver education is the first step. California accepts qualifying classroom instruction or an online program that meets the state’s equivalent requirements. Driver education and behind-the-wheel training are separate parts of the process.
Our online course covers the 30-hour driver education curriculum. You can work through it on your phone, tablet, or computer, with no page timers and automatic progress saving. Study in short sessions or spend more time on topics you want to review.
When you successfully finish, you’ll receive your Certificate of Completion of Driver Education, form DL 400C, often called the pink slip. Keep it safe—you’ll need proof of completion when applying through this education pathway.
Step 2: Apply for Your California Learner’s Permit
Once you’re at least 15½ and have completed the applicable education requirement, you can apply for your learner’s permit.
You’ll need to:
- Complete the California Driver’s License & ID Card Application.
- Have your parent or guardian sign if you’re under 18. Both must sign if they share joint custody.
- Provide the required identity and residency documents and other application information.
- Bring your driver education certificate when required.
- Complete your DMV office visit, including a photograph and fingerprint scan.
- Pass the vision and knowledge tests.
- Pay the application fee.
Check the DMV’s document requirements before your visit so you arrive prepared.
For teens following the driver education and training pathway, getting a permit does not mean you can immediately start practicing with family. Your instructor must validate it when you begin professional behind-the-wheel training.
After validation, you can practice with a California-licensed driver age 25 or older seated close enough to take control if needed. A learner’s permit never allows you to drive alone.
Step 3: Build Your Skills Behind the Wheel
Before taking the driving test for a license under 18, you must:
- Be at least 16.
- Hold your learner’s permit for at least six months.
- Complete six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training.
- Complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours at night.
The 50 practice hours are in addition to your professional driving lessons. Spread your practice across different routes and conditions so you gain experience with intersections, lane changes, parking, and nighttime visibility.
Your online driver education course covers the knowledge portion. Arrange behind-the-wheel lessons separately with a licensed driving school.
Step 4: Pass Your Driving Test and Get Licensed
Once you meet the age, permit, training, and practice requirements, schedule your DMV driving test. Review the appointment instructions and bring the required documents and a vehicle that meets DMV requirements.
After you pass and complete the remaining requirements, the DMV issues a temporary paper license while your license card is mailed to you. You can begin driving independently, subject to the provisional restrictions below.
California Teen Driving Laws You Should Know
Provisional License Rules for Your First Year
During your first 12 months with a provisional license, while you’re under 18, you generally cannot:
- Drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
- Transport passengers under age 20.
Permitted supervision can include a California-licensed parent or guardian, a California-licensed driver age 25 or older, or a licensed or certified driving instructor.
Limited exceptions also apply to certain medical, school, employment, and immediate-family transportation needs. These exceptions require appropriate documentation; simply having a reason to drive does not automatically qualify.
The passenger and nighttime restrictions end after 12 months or when you turn 18, whichever comes first.
California’s Phone Rules for Teen Drivers
California generally prohibits holding and using a phone while driving. For drivers under 18, the rule is stricter: you cannot use a cellphone or wireless electronic communications device while driving, even hands-free, except to call for emergency assistance.
Set your route before leaving, silence notifications, and park safely before checking your phone.
The Daylighting Law: Leave Space Before Crosswalks
California’s daylighting law helps drivers and pedestrians see each other at crossings.
Generally, you cannot stop, stand, or park within 20 feet of the vehicle-approach side of a marked or unmarked crosswalk. That distance is 15 feet where a curb extension is present.
The approach side is the side vehicles reach before entering the crosswalk. The rule can apply even without a red curb or sign. Follow any locally authorized markings that establish a different distance.
California Insurance Requirements
Drivers must carry proof of financial responsibility. For standard California auto liability policies, the minimum coverage limits are:
- $30,000 for injury or death to one person.
- $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person in an accident.
- $15,000 for damage to someone else’s property.
These higher limits took effect for policies issued or renewed beginning January 1, 2025. California’s Low Cost Auto Insurance Program has separate coverage limits for eligible participants.
Before a teen starts driving, ask your insurer how your policy covers a learner and when the teen needs to be added as a licensed driver.
