Recently, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) announced that the pilot “same-day driver’s license” printing program has been discontinued after issues with card quality and acceptance at places like airports and bars. Under this update, all standard driver licenses, learner permits (also called learner licenses), and identification cards will once again be mailed to applicants rather than printed onsite at DMV centers. 

Why the Change Happened

The same-day pilot, available in select locations like Lakeville and Moorhead, was designed to give drivers instant credentials. But DVS found that the quality and appearance of cards printed on-the-spot differed noticeably from those produced by the state’s contracted vendor, leading to confusion and acceptance problems. Based on the feedback, DVS recommended to the Legislature that the program not be expanded and instead be phased out. 

Impact on New Drivers and Permit Holders

For teens working through their 30-hour driver education requirements or preparing to transition from a permit to a driver license, this update means a little extra patience is required.
