You will have everything you need to earn your Iowa driver’s permit after taking our course, which is entirely taken online. The system guides you each step of the way, and multiple choice quizzes at the end of each section ensure that you understand what you have just learned.

What You Need To Get an Iowa Driver’s Permit

You can apply for a learner’s permit at the age of 14. Make sure that you have the following when you make that trip to your local Iowa DMV office:

  • Photo ID
  • The forms you need, signed by parent or guardian
  • The necessary fee

You will need to complete a written exam and undergo a mandatory vision test, and you will be given your Iowa learner’s permit once you pass these tests. At this point, as long as you are accompanied by an adult who has a license and is over 25, you will be able to legally practice your driving.

Enrolling in a driving school is also one of the things that you will want to do and of course, you should always make sure that you have a qualified and experienced instructor.

Getting Your Iowa Driver’s License

You can take the official Iowa DMV test once you reach the age of 16, although there are still some other requirements that you should be aware of:

  • You will need to have had your Iowa learner’s permit for six months.
  • Any required driver training or education course must have been successfully completed.
  • You will need to have driven alongside a qualified instructor for the mandated period of time.
  • You will need to have practiced for the required amount of hours (20), including practicing driving at night (2).

You will be given your temporary Iowa driver’s license if you successfully pass the test, and this is valid until your actual license is received by you. You will need to wait the required length of time before taking your driving test again should you fail.

Restrictions On Your Iowa License

Remember to be aware of all the restrictions that come with having a provisional Iowa license or a learner’s permit, and one of the most important is that a legal guardian and experienced driver at least 25 years old will need to accompany you for a while. You may also be forbidden to drive between 12:30am and 5am, and this is for your own safety as well as the safety of others.

Some exceptions to these restrictions include:

  • A medical emergency
  • Emancipation
  • Driving as part of your job
  • Activities at school

Look at the page concerning teenage drivers, on the Iowa DMV website.

Another important thing to remember is that you will also need insurance to drive a car in the state of Iowa, and you should make sure that your policy is up-to-date and that you have at least the minimum required coverage. Driving with inadequate or expired insurance is a serious offense. You may be faced with a fine or have your driver’s license taken away from you.

Iowa Text Messaging, Cell Phone and Drunk Driving Laws.

Perhaps you have not paid much attention to these laws and regulations while you were a passenger in someone else’s car, but now that you are driving in the state, you need to be aware of them. If you are caught driving while intoxicated or using a cell phone or texting while driving, you could be looking at fines or imprisonment, or perhaps both.

The fines and prison time can be even more severe if you are a repeat offender, making it even more imperative that you understand the penalties in Iowa. Make sure you are using a hands free device if you are using your cell phone while driving, and of course, you should never text and drive.
