Who is allowed to take online drivers education in Montana?

Anyone may take a Montana online drivers education course for instructional purposes. You will need approval from the Montana DMV if you would like Driver Ed To Go to substitute for a Montana traffic education program.

How old do I have to be to take my Montana learners permit exam?

You only need to be 14 1/2, but only if you are enrolled in a traffic education program. When you complete the program and turn 15, you can receive your Montana instruction permit.

What paperwork do I need before I can learn to drive a car in Montana?
The Montana Motor Vehicle Division ("MVD") will ask you for proof of your age and identification, as well as your residency in Montana and your social security number.  You will also need signed parental approval to obtain your Montana instruction permit and start driving.
What if I don’t pass Montana DMV's learners permit test? Will I have to wait to retake it?
You will need to pass a 33-question instruction permit exam, with 27 correct answers, to obtain your Montana instruction permit.  If you fail the first time (or the 10th), just show up at your nearest Montana MVD location the next day and try again.
How many questions are on your course's final exam?
Driver Ed To Go has a 35-question final exam, and you will need to get 80% to pass, just like your Montana instruciton permit exam.  Also like your Montana instruction permit exam, you can retake the exam at no additional cost until you pass.  You can't fail at Driver Ed To Go!
Does your course meet all Montana DMV requirements?

Currently, Driver Ed To Go is officially approved for state driver education training requirements in TX, NV, CA and FL. In Montana, the course is offered as a supplemental driver education learning program only, but will still be a valuable tool in helping you prepare for and pass all of yoru Montana driver education courses and exams.

How long until I receive my certificate of completion from Driver Ed To Go?
Usually 3-5 business days.  However, when you sign up for Driver Ed To Go, you can choose to have your Montana online driver ed completion certificate expedited with FedEx 3rd, 2nd or next-day delivery, for an added price.
When can I start driving on my Montana learners permit?

Right Away!  But, there are restrictions.  If you are under 15 and have a traffic education learner's license, you must be supervised by a licensed parent or guardian at all times.  If you have are between 15 and 16 and have a Montana instruction permit, yoy will still need by a licensed driver at least age 18 who has been authorized by your parent or guardian to supervise you in the passenger seat at all times.

For how long will I need to drive on a learners permit before I can get my Montana drivers license?

You must wait a minimum of six months after receiving your Montana instruction permit before applying for a Montana drivers license.

Am I required to attend a Montana driver training school?
Before you turn 16 and apply for youir Montana drivers license, you will need to finish a driver education course.  Behind-the-wheel training with a licensed Montana driving instructor will likely be involved as part of your Montana driver ed course requirements.
How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my Montana drivers license?
While you are preparing for your drivers license exam and are driving with a Montana instruction permit, you will need to log 50 hours of supervised driving practice.  Ten of these practice hours will need to take place at night and you will need to have these hours attested to by a parent or legal guardian when you submit them to the Montana MVD.
Can my friends ride with me after I get my Montana instruction permit?

No.  If you have an instruction permit you cannto transport other passengers unelss they are family members, and and you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or by a licensed driver at least age 18 who has been authorized by your parent or guardian to supervise you, at all times.

Can my friends ride with me after I get my Montana drivers license?

Yes, but there are restrictions.  You must be accompanied by a licensed Montana driver at least 18 years old for the first year. For the first 6 months you can have one additional passenger, and for the second 6 months you can have 3 additional passengers.  After that, you can drive your friends around with no restrictions other than standard Montana traffic safety laws.
