To take your learners permit exam in Iowa, you must be 14 years of age.  Taking an online driver education course like Driver Ed To Go is an excellent way to prepare for this exam and begin learning to drive (safely!) as soon as possible.
Who is allowed to take Iowa online drivers education courses?

What paperwork do I need before I can learn to drive a car?

You will need a few documents to show the Iowa DMV.  First you will need to show proof of your birth, most easily shown with a birth certificate, and proof of your Iowa residency, which you can show with mail addressed to you or proof of your enrollment in an Iowa school.  You should also bring your social security card or some other proof of your social security number.  Finally, you may need to fill out and have your parents sign Iowa Form #430018, which you can obtain from an Iowa DMV office or the Iowa DMV website.  This form is a Parent's Written Consent to Issue Privilege to Drive.  If a parent or legal guardian accompanies you to the Iowa DMV when you take your learners permit test, you can skip having to fill out this form.

What if I don’t pass the Iowa learners permit test? Can I take the test over?
Don't worry too much if you don't pass your Iowa instruction permit exam the first time.  While you may have to wait a day before retaking the exam, you can take the instruction permit exam as many times as you need until you pass.  By enrolling in Driver Ed To Go, you can be confident that you will pass the first time with ease, and be on your way to fulfilling your driver education requirements, all for an extremely low price.

Does your course meet all Iowa DMV requirements?
Driver Ed To Go is primarily an education tool you can use to prepare for your Iowa instruction permit and drivers license exams, and to supplement your Iowa-DMV required drivers ed requirements.  However, if you contact the Iowa DMV, you may be given an opportunity to substitute in-class drivers education courses with online drivers education courses.  Contact the Iowa DMV to find out if an online drivers education course is right for you.

When you register with Driver Ed To Go, you can choose how quickly you want to receive your certificate.  You choose ground delivery for free, which usually takes 3-5 business days.  Or, you can pay for FedEx overnight, 2nd day or 3rd day delivery.  The choice is up to you when you take the Driver Ed To Go Iowa drivers education course.
Now that I have my Iowa instruction permit, can I start driving?

At 14, you may apply for an instruction permit with the Iowa DMV that allows you to practice driving with your parent or guardian, a family member over 21, a driver education course teacher, or a driver over 25 if you have the written permission of your parent or guardian.

How long do I need to have my instruction permit before I can get my Iowa drivers license?

At 16, you can receive a provisional drivers license that allows you to drive in Iowa between 5am and 12:30am, without supervision, if you have completed the necessary drivers education coursework and Iowa driver training requirements.  You will then need to drive for one year without incurring a traffic violation to qualify for your unrestricted Iowa drivers license.

Am I required to do behind-the-wheel training?

When you receive your Iowa instruction permit, you will be required to enroll in a school-sponsored Iowa drivers education course. As part of this course, you will be required to spend 3 hours behind the wheel under the supervision of an Iowa licensed driving instructor.

How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my Iowa drivers license?

When you receive your Iowa instruction permit, you will need to fulfill 20 hours of practice driving, 2 of which must be at night. The Iowa DMV requires these driving sessions be supervised by a parent, legal guardian, a licensed family member over 21, or a licensed Iowa driver 25 years or older with your parents' permission. This will allow you to receive your provisional Iowa drivers license. To receive your graduated license when you turn 17, you must complete 10 more hours of supervised driving, 2 of which must be at night, and which also must be signed off on by your parents. Even though you can drive unsupervised with your provisional Iowa drivers license, the Iowa DMV asks that these hours are supervised to assure your progress developing your safe driving habits.

Can my friends ride with me after I get my Iowa instruction permit?

Only with additional supervision.  Iowa state law requires that instruction permit drivers be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian, a family member over 21, a driver education course teacher, or a driver over 25 if you have the written permission of your parent or guardian.

Can my friends ride with me after I get my Iowa drivers license?

Yes, if you have a provisional Iowa drivers license, your friends can drive with you if there are enough seatbelts.  Between 12:30am and 5am, though, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, someone in your family at least 21 years old, or a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old.
