Windom's Defensive DrivingFAQ's

How do I know if Windom's Defensive Driving is licensed by New York's DMV to offer behind-the-wheel training courses?
While we do include Windom's Defensive Driving's contact information in our driving school directory, we cannot say with certainty as to whether Windom's Defensive Driving is certified by the State of New York.  We recommend that you either contact Windom's Defensive Driving directly or possibly the New York DMV to find out if Windom's Defensive Driving is a certified driver training school.
Will the New York DMV allow my parents to supervise my driving practice instead of requiring me to take a behind-the-wheel training course at a state-approved driving school?
Possibly.  Some states will allow your parents to supervise your driving practice as a substitute to taking a behind-the-wheel driving course with a professional driving instructor.  You will need to contact the New York DMV to find out if your behind-the-wheel driving may be done by your parents in New York.
Do you know if Windom's Defensive Driving will let me complete my behind-the-wheel training using an automatic-shift vehicle? I don't know anything about using a stick-shift.
Considering you're a brand new driver, you probably don't know a whole lot about driving ANY type of vehicle, be it a manual OR an automatic!  Nevertheless, if you have a preference, you probably should contact Windom's Defensive Driving and see if they can accommodate you before registering for their behind-the-wheel training course.
I live in a small mountain town, where there are a lot of small, unpaved roads. Will my driver training with Windom's Defensive Driving include learning how to drive in rural areas? Or do they just offer training for city driving?
Most local driving schools will likely want their students to know how to drive safely in the local area.  Therefore, chances are good that the driver training you receive from Windom's Defensive Driving will include handling dirt roads and mountain driving.
After I turn 14, will I be eligible to get my instruction permit so I can begin to learn how to drive?
It depends on which state you live in, however most states unfortunately require you to be at least 15 (or sometimes 15 1/2) before you can be issued a learner's permit.  We suggest that you contact a local driver training school such as Windom's Defensive Driving or the New York DMV office to learn more about the minimum age requirement for driving in New York.
