Minnesota Driver License Requirements at-a-glance:

  • Minimum Age for Learner Permit 15 years
  • Learner Permit Holding Period 6 months
  • Minimum Amount of Supervised Driving 30 hours, including 10 at night
  • Minimum Age for Driver License 16 years

  • Unsupervised Driving Prohibitions For first six (6) months after receiving your provisional driver's license, you may not drive between 12 midnight and 5am without a qualified supervising driver present
  • Passenger Rules For first six (6) months after receiving your provisional driver's license, you may only carry (1) non-family passenger who is younger than 20 years old unless your parent/guardian is with you. During second six (6) months, you are allowed to carry up to three (3) non-family member passengers.
  • Other Driver education is a requirement for applicants under 18
