How old do I have to be before applying for my New York learners permit?
At 16, you can apply and receive your New York junior learners permit.  You must also enroll in a New York driver education class.
Can I take driver education online?
Anyone can take Driver Ed To Go as a supplementary educational tool in New York, and our online driver education course will fully prepare you for your NY driving exams and driver training schoool.  However, only the New York DMV can authorize your participation to satisfy New York DMV-required driver education training.
Do I need to bring in paperwork when I take my learners permit exam?
Be sure to bring with you several documents when you take your learners permit exam at a New York DMV location:  your birth certificate, proof of address, your social security card, signed parental approval (or just go with your parent or guardian) and proof of auto insurance covering you as a new driver.
What if I fail my learners permit exam?
First, don't panic!  The New York DMV will let you retake the exam until you pass, though you may only be able to take the test once per day.  You need to score 14/20 on the written text to pass.  Driver Ed To Go's online driver ed course will prepare you for this test and help you make sure you pass the first time with ease.
How many questions are on the Driver Ed To Go final exam?
Driver Ed To Go's New York online driver education classes have a 35-question final exam at the end, which you must pass with an 80% to receive your completion certificate (you can take the test until you pass).  This test will fullly prepare you for your New York driving exams, and give you added tips to learn to be a safe and smart New York driver.
Does your New York online driver ed course meet DMV requirements?
Our Driver Ed To Go New York online driver education course is primarily supplementary educational too, designed to prepare you for DMV exams and get you on the road as safe and fast aspossible.  However, only the New York DMV can authorize your participation to satisfy New York DMV-required driver education training.
When will I receive my certificate of completion?
When you pass the Driver Ed To Go final exam, we will ship your certificate free of charge using US postal ground service.  If you need your certificate fast than 3-5 business days, you can choose to expedite delivery with FedEx overnight, 2nd day, or 3rd day service for an added price.
If I have my learners permit, can I start driving right away?
If the New York DMV has given you yoru New York junior learners permit, you can begin driving immediately, but you must be under the supervision of a licensed New York driver, age 21 or over, at all times.
How long do I have to have my learners permit before getting my New York learners permit?
You only need to practice driving on your New York learners permit for six months, in addition to finishing your driver education courses, in order to apply for your provisional New York drivers license.  You will have to wait another six months before getting your graduated class-D license, or turn 17, whichever comes earlier.
Can my friends ride with me now that I have my New York learners permit?
The only persons allowed to drive with you while you still have your New York junior learners permit is a 21-year old licensed New York driver.  With this supervision, other family members can also ride with you.
Can I drive my friends around when I get my provisional drivers license?

Some of them can.  Until you get your graduated class-D new York license at 17, you can have only 2 passengers with you, unless they are family members or your guardian.

Can I drive alone on my learners permit?
You can never drive alone with a New York junior learners permit.  New York state law forbids this in an effort to keep you and other drivers safe, pending sufficient driver education on your part.
Do I need behind-the-wheel training from a driving school to get my NY drivers license?

If you are age 17 and have a junior license, you must complete a state-approved high school or college driver education course to get a graduated class-D new York driver license, and some of that class time will include behind-the-wheel training with a licensed New York driving instructor.

To convert your provisional license to a graduated license after completing this trainning, you will need to bring your provisional license and the Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) that you received from your instructor to any New York DMV.  You will also need proof that you are 17 years old.

Does the New York DMV require me to practice outside of class?
Yes, but only to receive your graudated New York class-D license (only a driver ed course is required to get your provisional license).  Before applying, you will need to complete 50 hours of supervised driving, affirmed by your parents or legal guardians, ten of which are during the night.
