How old do I have to be to take my Alaska online driver education instruction permit exam?

In Alaska, you are required to have some behind-the-wheel training before receiving your Alaska instruction permit or drivers license.  However, you are not required to attend a professional driving school to obtain the behind-the-wheel practice you need to obtain your Alaska instruction permit or drivers license.
How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my driver’s license?
The Alaska DMV requires you to have 40 hours of supervised driving before sitting for your formal Alaska drivers license written and on-the-road exams.  At least 10 of those hours will need to be at night.
Can my friends ride with me after I get my Alaska instruction permit?
Once you have received your Alaska instruction permit, you can begin driving with the supervision of another licensed Alaska driver.  While you can drive with your friends in the car, you must also have at least one Alaska licensed driver, 21 years of age with at least one year of driving experience, in the car with all of you, and they must be in the passenger seat.
Can my friends ride with me after I get my Alaska drivers license?
Once you have passed your Alaska drivers license exams and are of legal age, you will receive your Alaska drivers license.  For the first six months, your Alaska drivers license will only have provisional status, pending your showing of safe driving habits for the six-month period.  During that period, you may carry other passengers in your car, but a parent, legal guardian or licensed Alaska driver 21 years or older must be present.  When your provisional license period has ended, you will receive full Alaska driving privileges and can drive with your friends without adult supervision. 
Can I drive alone with my Alaska instruction permit?
No, you must be accompanied by an Alaska licensed driver aged 21 years or older with at least 1 year of driving experience.  If you drive without proper supervision while you are only in possession of an Alaska instruction permit, you will likely have all Alaska driving privileges suspended and you will not be able to obtain an Alaska drivers license for some time after you would normally be eligible.
