Louisiana Online Drivers Education

This Louisiana Online Driver Ed program is usually required before you are able to obtain your state learner’s permit. The purpose of the course is to instruct new drivers in the proper way to handle the road responsibly and courteously, thus learning and maintaining good driving skills and habits throughout their lives. There are many procedures to learn in order to be at a place of confident, skilled driving. One of the wisest steps you can take is to begin the process of applying for your state permit here in Louisiana, or if appropriate, applying for your first Louisiana state driver license. In order to make sure everything goes according to plan keep in mind the following pre-requisites.

The Louisiana Instructional Learner Permit

As young as the age of 15, you are able to submit an application for a Louisiana Class E learner’s permit. This will require a preset appointment with the Office of Motor Vehicles, and they will require you to submit the following documentation:

  • Proof of completion of the 38-hour required driver education course
  • Your birth certificate
  • Two individual forms of identification (call your local office for information on acceptable forms of personal identification).
  • Your Social Security card
  • A processing fee of $24.50

Your Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles will then copy these materials and then test you with a Louisiana written exam, a test to identify proper traffic signs and a standard vision test. Upon successful completion of these examinations, you will have then earned your driver’s permit for the state of Louisiana. Keep in mind that this only permits you to drive while riding with a licensed driver of at least 18 years of age or older. At last, when you have carried your permit for 6 months incident-free, you are ready to submit your application for your Louisiana State Intermediate Driver’s License. You are at an exciting stage!

The Louisiana State Intermediate Driver’s License

The requirements for application for an Intermediate Driver License are as follows. The applicant must be 16 years of age and have passed Stage 1 of the Louisiana education policy successfully. Other requirements include passing the road skills test in driving, and you must prove you have had 35 hours or more driving behind-the-wheel. This requirement can be met through the signing of an affidavit by the licensed adult that certifies the fulfillment of the required hours.

Also required:

  • Must have a good-standing permit over the last 6 months.
  • Must pay the fee for the road test (This requirement may not be identical from place to place. Check your local Department of Motor Vehicles for correct information pertinent to you.)
  • You must provide proper identification at the time of the application.
  • The vehicle you use must be up-to-date in all aspects, including insurance, inspection, registration, and licensing. If not, the vehicle will not be permitted for use in the testing process and may even lead to ticketing the owner.

Congratulations again. This time for passing the road test! You are now a licensed Louisiana State Intermediate Driver. The only down side is that a few restrictions are still on your driver’s license. In order to upgrade to the next level you will need to keep your intermediate license for 6 months in good standing.

If you have turned 17 years of age, you are now eligible to take your intermediate license to the Motor Vehicle Department, along with the required documentation, and you may apply for a full license then and there.

Penalties and Restrictions on Teen Driver Licenses

Many of the restrictions placed on the teenager’s license to drive are put in place with safety in mind. Think about your permit:

  • You can only drive with a guardian or a parent that is fully licensed and insured.
  • Only a few individuals can occupy the vehicle unless an education instructor is present.
  • Accompanying licensed drivers must be over 18 years of age.

Intermediate restrictions to consider include:

  • You cannot drive a vehicle legally between 11 pm and 5 am unless you have a licensed driver over 21 in your company.

Another vital point to take to heart is the situation that is held in regard to insurance. Louisiana auto insurance laws and financial responsibility laws must be known and carefully adhered to.

Once you have earned your full Louisiana state driver’s license, it is extremely important that you understand not only your rights but your responsibilities on the road. Irresponsible and dangerous driving can lead to fines, license suspension, and imprisonment. This is not to mention accidental death.
