After completing the behind-the-wheel portion of driver education, a student who is at lease 15 yrs and 10 months may apply for a Driver Education Learner Permit. This allows the student to drive while supervised. Upon successful completion of driver education and both the road and written tests, the student receives a Level 1 Permit. For six months, driving is allowed only when supervised. During this time, only 2 passengers are allowed in addition to the supervising driver. After six months, the Level 1 Permit is the equivalent of an intermediate driver license. Driver License applicants younger than age 18 must have held a Level 1 Permit for at least 12 months.
